Overview

Today's NY Times reports a demonstration of Italian Unions. Accompanying the article is a photo of a crowd in Rome, brandishing brandishing CGIL banners (the former communist labor federation).
Albert S Kirsch, 29 March 2002

The red flags with CGIL and other inscriptions in white or yellow would seem to belong to the Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavore, the Italian General Confederation of Labor.
Joe McMillan, 23 April 2002

Here is the flag of the trade union cgil, the most important and with more members of Italy. The initials, down on the right side, are the european and world trade union confederations. The colors in the left-top corner are (with the color of the background) the italian colors.

Previous Flag

CGIL has also regional flags. Usually the regional flags are similar at the national flag with the name of the region. In my Region (Trentino Alto-Adige), my province (Alto Adige) has two official languages: Italian and German. For that reason our flag is different. In the flag, Alto-Adige is the Italian name of the province and Sudtirol is the name in German. The initials AGB mean Autonomer Gewerkschafts-bund (Autonomous Trade Union). I know that it is not the translation of the Italian name but however it's so. The colors in the corner are the european union colors. Below it is the former flag of CGIL of my province.

Federations Flags

The logo of cgil is very simple: a red square and on the upper side there is inscription in black "CGIL". Most of the federations flags are based on this logo.

3.- FILLEA (Federazione Italiana Lavoratori Legno Edilizia e Affini) - Italian Wood, Builiding Trade and Similar Workers Federation

by Aaron Belotti, 16 December 2002

In the flag of FILLEA down on the right side the words "Costruzioni e Legno" means "Building and Wood" The red background of the flags of the Trade Union CGIL has clearly a leftist meaning.

6.- FIOM (Federazione Impiegati e Operai Metallurgici) - Metallurgical Employees and Workers Federation

by Aaron Belotti, 16 December 2002

Here is photo 156 from Yahoo anti-war slideshow . It's a flag of some trade union, perhaps a local delegation. This image is cropped and enlarged, showing details of the logo, drawn in yellow and green, including what's almost certainly a hammer. This and the CGIL inscription now visible in the upper fly identifies the flag as a trade union flag, without a doubt. It might be the flag of a local delegation of the FIOM (Metallurgical Employees and Workers Federation). The logo surely looks suspiciously similar.
In the cropping, a "pace" flag is also partially visible.
Jorge Candeias, 22 March 2003

9.- FNLE (Federazione Nazionale Lavoratori Energia) - National Energy Workers Federation

by Aaron Belotti, 16 December 2002

Today's 'Independent on Sunday' newspaper has a photograph of yesterday's demonstration in Rome. Many flags but there is one striking one which I do not recognise and cannot find on our Italian pages. It is red over blue separated by a broad zig-zag yellow band from lower hoist to upper fly. It looks as though there are letters at the upper hoist, but the picture shows the reverse and in any case it's too small to see.
André Coutanche, 24 March 2002

This is the flag of CGIL-FNLE. CGIL stands for "Confederazione Generale Italiana Lavoratori" and is the largest italian workers' syndacate, left-oriented. FNLE stands for "Federazione Nazionale Lavoratori Elettrici" and is the CGIL section of workers in the electrical industries and utilities.
